Breeding Exquisite English Roses Since 1961
For almost 60 years David Austin has been breeding exquisite English Roses. Renowned for their beautiful, often many petalled, repeat flowering blooms and enticing, rich fragrances there are now over 200 rose varieties bred by David Austin, each one making a fantastic contribution to any garden.
Today, most of our growing is still carried out by hand, just as it was at the very beginning. Every plant that we sell has been hand-budded, a traditional and intricate skill carried out by our experts millions of times each year.
In the early 1950s David Austin set out to create a more beautiful rose. Sixty years on, this simple objective remains. Rose breeding is often described as being as much an art as a science.
Breeding a new rose is a unique mix of art and science requiring patience and dedication. From pollination to sale, the whole process of creating a new English Rose takes 10 years.
The blooms are a beautiful blend of pink, apricot and yellow, giving the overall impression of orange. They have a lovely myrrh fragrance. It forms a bushy, rounded shrub with quite straight stems.
When young, the outer petals of each bloom form a perfect ring around an inner cup, gradually opening out to form a perfect, medium-large rosette. The color is a deep, rich crimson-pink, taking on a tinge of mauve just before the petals drop.
With its vigorous, upright growth, it makes a very good climber, both in beauty and performance. It bears medium-sized, cupped blooms of an unusually rich, pure shade of yellow. They have a light Tea fragrance.
Rich orange-red buds open to chalice-shaped blooms, filled with loosely arranged, orange petals. The surrounding outer petals are salmon-pink with beautifully contrasting golden-yellow undersides.
Pale peachy pink buds gradually open to form neatly cupped, cream rosettes. Each bloom has a perfect ring of waxy petals enclosing numerous smaller petals. Eventually the petals turn back to form a large, domed flower.
Bears medium-sized neat rosette blooms – tinged with orange at first, quickly becoming rich yellow. It has a light-medium musky Tea Rose scent. The growth is compact, even and upright.
A particularly free-flowering climber, producing impressive displays of blooms into fall. The refined rosette flowers are rich yellow at the center, fading to palest yellow on the edges.
An exceptionally beautiful rose; the distinctive blooms are very neat and rather flat. Each bloom is a lovely soft pink, with a subtle apricot hue, the smaller central petals deepening to rich apricot and surrounding a button eye, which unfurls to reveal deep-set stamens. The strong Tea fragrance becomes more Old Rose, with delicious hints of lemon and grapefruit. It forms a bushy shrub with strong, healthy, upright growth.
Beautifully rounded flowers, with neatly placed petals making up perfect rosettes. The buds are lightly tinged with yellow but as the flowers open they become pure white.
The unusually large, bright pink flowers are full-petalled and deeply cupped. In spite
of their size, they are never clumsy, being held nicely poised on a well-rounded shrub.
